July typically brings good mountain hiking conditions, but the sea-influenced Picos can shift from sunny and warm to cool, misty, windy, or wet—all in the same day. What makes MT Sobek’s Spain Picos de Europa Hiking Tour unique?

This is a special Follow the Leader journey through one of Spain's most distinctive mountain ranges, led by Erik Perez in his native Picos de Europa.

Exclusive Insider Expertise: This trip is led by Erik Perez, a legendary MT Sobek guide who calls these mountains home and has been an MT Sobek guide since 1989. MT Sobek has a long history in the region, and Erik helped guide guests here in the early days of our Picos programs. This itinerary marks a special return for MT Sobek to an area they previously operated in for 18 years.

Hidden Limestone Gems: The Picos de Europa are far more striking, more beautiful, and significantly less crowded than the famous Pyrenees. Because these mountains are harder to access, you won't encounter typical tour groups here, which means more mountain serenity on the trail.

Intriguing History: From Santo Toribio de Liebana to Oviedo's UNESCO-listed pre-Romanesque monuments, explore the sites, stories, and turning points that shaped northern Spain with Erik's expert insight.

Historic Lodgings: Wind down in modern and landmark Paradores and celebrated historic properties, including the 18th-century Hotel de la Reconquista.

When is the best time to hike the Picos de Europa?

Summer is one of the best seasons for hiking the Picos de Europa, offering a refreshing, emerald-tinted escape and the best window to lace up your boots and explore this limestone wonderland.

Ideal hiking weather: The Picos boast a beautifully mild microclimate. Thanks to the "Green Spain" weather patterns in Cantabria and Asturias, summer temperatures in the valleys hover comfortably around 68°F to 78°F, while high-altitude trails above 5,900 feet remain crisp and cool (typically between 50°F and 65°F). It is the perfect climate for strenuous ascents without the risk of heat exhaustion.

Low chance of snow: Because the Picos de Europa feature jagged peaks topping 8,200 feet, heavy snow and ice frequently blanket the high mountain passes and scree trails into May and June. Waiting until summer offers the best chance that high-altitude routes—like the technical scramble up Pico Tesorero or the rugged traverses through the Central Massif—are clear, safe, and accessible.

Mountain culture: Summer is when the region's dwindling traditional shepherds move up from the low valleys into the high alpine meadows (vegas) with their cows, sheep, and goats. This seasonal migration is vital for the production of the region's world-famous, piquant blue cheeses like Cabrales, which are aged in the limestone caves dotting the high peaks. Passing through these active pastoral landscapes with the ringing of distant cowbells is a profound cultural experience.

Summit to sand: One of the great geographical quirks of the Picos and Cantabrian Range is that these soaring 8,000-foot peaks sit a mere 15 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Stable summer weather unlocks the unique ability to conquer a limestone peak and be swimming in the refreshing surf of the Cantabrian Sea by late afternoon.

What makes this a Level 3-4 adventure?

The trip combines moderate hiking days with several demanding mountain routes. Expect rocky limestone terrain, sustained climbs and descents, and hiking days up to 13 miles with as much as 4,800 feet of gain and loss. Some routes include steep trails, scree, narrow paths and exposure, or optional scrambling. You should arrive prepared for consecutive mountain hikes. With two guides, there will be the option for a less strenuous (Level 3) route on some days.

Is there exposure or scrambling on this trip?
Yes, there is notable exposure on several days of this trip. The Picos de Europa are sensational limestone mountains characterized by sharp massifs, sheer cliff faces, and deep chasms. While the trails are well-traveled, you should expect to encounter heights and steep drop-offs. For instance, the Cares Gorge (Ruta del Cares) on Day 5 is one of the most famous hikes in the Picos, offering awe-inspiring views and near-vertical walls. The trail hugs the side of the canyon, and your guides will manage pacing, so everyone feels comfortable on these hikes.
What is a Parador?
Paradores are a collection of government-owned hotels. While some are modern, most are set primarily in historical locations such as ancient castles, monasteries, and fortresses, some dating back to the ninth century. These properties are chosen for their regional character and provide a restful environment to recharge, featuring commonly requested amenities such as Wi-Fi, air conditioning, minibars, and safes.

In each destination we select the best available choice, but please note that both rooms and beds may be smaller than you are accustomed to. Twin rooms in Spain are often configured with two single beds placed side-by-side and joined by a shared headboard or bedframe; these beds cannot be moved apart from each other.
What is the group size for this trip?
The group size is 6 to 16 guests, creating a personal, flexible mountain experience. A smaller group helps the guide manage route choices, weather decisions, and pacing while preserving the camaraderie that makes Follow the Leader departures so memorable. What is the minimum age for this trip?
The minimum age for this trip is 18.
